The short-sea shipping segment continues its steady transition toward high-efficiency operations with the successful delivery of MV Norsund to Arriva Shipping

This milestone marks the latest addition to Arriva’s fleet renewal strategy, following the success of the MV Nor Viking and preceding further sister vessels currently under construction at the Jiangsu SOHO Marine Heavy Industry yard.

A Strategic Leap in Sustainability

For Arriva Shipping, the delivery of MV Norsund is a clear commitment to reducing the company's carbon footprint. As CEO and Partner Sindre Matre noted regarding the fleet's expansion, these investments are designed to meet increasingly strict environmental regulations and the growing demand from customers for greener, more efficient logistics solutions.

By integrating hybrid technology into their 8,000 DWT dry cargo vessels, Arriva is setting a high bar for the modernization of the European short-sea fleet.

The Technology Behind the Vessel

To achieve these ambitious goals, SEAM has delivered a comprehensive technology package designed to optimize every aspect of the vessel’s energy cycle. The MV Norsund is equipped with a 1904 kWh battery system, providing the foundation for hybrid operations that reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

The heart of the vessel’s technical operation is managed by SEAM’s proprietary hybrid power and automation suite:

e-SEAMatic® IAS & EPMS: these systems provide integrated control and intelligent energy power management, ensuring that the interplay between the engines and the battery system is always optimized for the current operational profile.

e-SEAMatic® Drive (900kVa): this power electronics solution manages the energy flow with high precision.

e-SEA® Shaft Generator (900kW): operating at 1200/1500rpm, the shaft generator allows the vessel to produce electricity efficiently from the main engine, further reducing the need for auxiliary generators.

e-SEA® Shore Connection & Transformer: to ensure zero-emission port stays, the vessel is equipped with a dedicated shore connection cabinet and transformer, allowing it to shut down its engines and plug into the local grid for both operations and battery charging.

Strengthening Regional Value Chains

While the vessel was constructed in China, the MV Norsund project highlights the strength of Norwegian and European maritime clusters. By utilizing SEAM’s Norwegian-developed technology and design, Arriva Shipping is helping to strengthen regional value chains while deploying world-class technology on a global scale.

We look forward to seeing her lead the way in sustainable maritime transport, and we wish the captain and crew safe and efficient voyages ahead.
