MS “Fjordstrøm” and MS “Fjordtind” Delivered with 4MW Battery Packs

June 4, 2024

These fast passenger/combi catamarans, earmarked for routes to Gildeskål and Værøy in Nordland County, have set a notable record with each of their 24-tonne battery pack—the largest ever delivered by shipyard Brødrene Aa.

Fjordstrøm and Fjordtind

MS Fjordstrøm and MS Fjordtind, built and designed by Brødrene Aa, have both been delivered to Norled

The fast ferries each have a 24-tonne battery pack of 4MW

They are designed to maintain a speed of 30 knots in 2.5 meter (Hs) waves and can still cruise at 18 knots when the waves reach four meters

MS Fjordstrøm will service the Bodø-Gildeskål-Væran connection in the northern part of Norway

MS Fjordtind will service the Bodø-Gildeskål connection.

Both vessels feature a comprehensive e-SEAMatic® BLUE package from SEAM

It is estimated that the two vessels will cut CO2 emissions by 3,000 tonnes annually

Powered by an advanced battery system and complemented by two onboard range extenders (diesel generators) for added flexibility, the express vessels are designed to operate on electricity for most of their route production – 70% to be exact. They are also designed to maintain a speed of 30 knots in 2.5 meter (Hs) waves and can still cruise at 18 knots when the waves reach four meters.

As part of Nordland county’s initiative to enhance its maritime fleet, Norled secured the order for two vessels in the autumn of 2021. MS Fjordstrøm led the way and was delivered earlier this year, with the second vessel recently completed at Brødrene Aa's shipyard in Hyen.

As a hybrid vessel, the MS Fjordstrøm is anticipated to run on electricity for an impressive 70 percent of its operational time. Serving the Værøy and Gildeskål fast boat connection, the ferry accommodates up to 130 passengers, offers cargo space for goods, and proudly features the largest battery pack ever installed in an express vessel by Brødrene Aa.

MS Fjordtind, the mirror image of Fjordstrøm, will service the connection Bodø – Gildeskål. Both have a length of 40m and width of 10m. The county council estimates that the two vessels will cut CO2 emissions by 3,000 tonnes annually. Which is equivalent to 1,500 diesel cars.

Facilitating the vessel's groundbreaking hybrid capabilities is the e-SEAMatic® BLUE hybrid solution by SEAM:

e-SEA® Maneuver

e-SEAMatic® IAS

e-SEAMatic® EPMS

e-SEA® Drives

A powerful 3920 kWh Battery System

e-SEA® Switchboards

2 x 650kW electric motor for each of the main propellers

Congratulations to Norled and the project partners.
